Within And Without by Washed Out

Album Review:

Ernest Greene (Washed Out) started recording music from his bedroom studio and developed a following from a number of music bloggers to become one of the artists associated with the chillwave movement. Within And Without is his first full length album and a decent follow up to his two previously released EPs. While his latest release seems to be missing some of the catchy melodies prevalent in his earlier work, the album can still stand on its own. If I were to pick one thing I would change about the album would be to select a different album cover, but I would keep the music as is, light and enjoyable.

Strange Negotiations by David Bazan

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

Album Review:

In 2006, David Bazan split off from his 1995 formed band Pedro the Lion and started his solo career. Known for story telling talents and interesting arrangements, the music of David Bazan embodies today’s indie music and he has developed a following over the years. On the language front, about half of the tracks on this album utilize strong language so it won’t be one joining my collection.

Burn by Jo Dee Messina
Album Review:

Jo Dee Messina’s third studio album hits the mark between country and pop and displays some of her best work while representing two years of dedicated work. Once again produced by Tim McGraw, he even gets in on the action with the popular number one single “Bring On the Rain”. Even many of those that do not enjoy the country genre, there is something about Jo Dee’s voice that can reach out to those that hear her music.

Ghost On The Canvas by Glen Campbell

Album Review:

A heartfelt send off from one of the industry’s most legendary voices, Ghost On The Canvas by Glen Campbell will be his last studio recording due to the progression of his Alzheimer’s disease. Although his health is deteriorating, this new release is top notch and vocally is one of Campbell’s best sounding albums since the late seventies. The format includes a handful of short interlude pieces between some of the longer tracks almost walking the listener through the ups and downs of his life story and features contributions from Jakob Dylan, Paul Westerberg, Brian Setzer, Chris Isaak, Billy Corgan and more. The bonus edition includes two additional tracks ‘What I Wouldn’t Give’ and ‘Wish You Were Here’. Rhinestone Cowboy may be riding off into the sunset, but the legend will carry on.

August & Everything After – Live From Town Hall by Counting Crows

August & Everything After – Live At Town Hall [Explicit] by Counting Crows

Album Review:

If they were looking for material to perform for a live recording, the Counting Crows didn’t have to look any further than the track set from an album that sold over 7 million copied in the US, August & Everything After. Known for great live performances where Adam Duritz reworks some of the songs to blend in with other hits or hits from other artists, the new album, recorded at Town Hall in New York City, showcases extended versions of many of the songs extending the album by 25 minutes. Once again, I am a little confused by the Explicit description for few reasons as the source material, while considered artistic, is not Explicit and the live recording was made for both CD and DVD. Since it is a new release, I have not had a chance to listen through to verify whether or not there are any Explicit lyrics. We’ll leave it up to Counting Crows fans, if you love the original album from 1993, chances are you will love August & Everything After: Live From Town Hall.

Michael English by Michael English
Album Review:

Michael English has gone through a number of struggles in his life, from the top of the christian music world as a Dove Artist of the year to the depths of despair and ruin only to return as a prodigal son. The self-titled album was released about a year after the scandal became public causing much of his music to be pulled from the Christian Radio airwaves and re-marketed as adult contemporary pop by a new label. Some still consider this album to be his best and scandal aside, the message of the music still reflects a strong faith. Many have heard and come to love the song “Mary, Did You Know?” and wanting to hear more from this talented artist. If you are looking for an album to lift your spirit and don’t mind listening to contemporary christian pop from the nineties, Michael English may just fit the bill.

Nothing Is Wrong by Dawes

Friday, August 26th, 2011

Album Review:

Smart, heartfelt lyrics and well placed harmonies all wrapped around great melodies makes Nothing Is Wrong, not only a great sophomore outing, but possibly one of the best albums this year. While their first album, North Hills, was recorded on analog equipment in a Live environment, their latest release features a much cleaner studio production while keeping their folk root rock sound. In addition, the band members play so well together that they makes it sound almost too easy to be real and the influence of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young is very evident the deeper you get into the album. When so many groups are trying their hardest to be biggest and loudest on the block, it nice to slow down and enjoy the easy going quiet melodies that confirm the listener’s hope that Nothing Is Wrong (with the album or with life).

Forevermore [Bonus Edition] by Whitesnake

Album Review:

David Coverdale and his band Whitesnake are back again with their second album since 2008. There is no question what band is performing when listening to their newest album Forevermore as the sounds in unmistakably Whitesnale and even though Coverdale’s voice shows some of the wear and tear of the years, he is still able to deliver on both the slower tracks such as “Easier Said Than Done” and the seven minute title track as well as the no holds barred, try to keep up with me, I’m old but not that old rock tracks including “All Out of Luck”. If you are a fan of Whitesnakes early to mid 80s music, chances are you will enjoy Forevermore as well.

Luciano Pavarotti – The Best by Luciano Pavarotti

Album Review:

There may never be another voice quite like Luciano Pavarotti. Known as one of the best, if not the best tenor the world has heard and whose music helped open minds to opera and expose multiple generations to one of musics purest forms. Experience one of the best collections featuring over two hours of his most famous performances from the prime of his career (70’s and 80’s) including: “Nessum Dorma,” “La Donna E Mobile,” “O Sole Mio,” and an exquisite rendition of “Libiamo Ne Lieti Calici.” Even many that do not count themselves as fans of operatic music may find their hearts and ears stirred by the music of this legendary singer. Pick up this incredible collection at an incredible price while it lasts.
