The Head And The Heart by The Head and the Heart

Album Review:

Folksy Blues pop mixed with a couple faster songs makes this debut release a sign of good things to come from Seattle’s The Head And The Heart band that some have compared to London’s Mumford and Sons. At times an Americana sounds the lyrics are driving and though provoking and at times slightly upbeat even when talking about death. The album is good from start to finish and there are times that you find yourself singing along even if you don’t know the words.

Whatever and Ever Amen by Ben Folds Five

Album Review:

Even when it was released in 1997, fans could see that Whatever and Ever Amen wasn’t going to be a Sophomore slump for Ben Folds Five. Highlighted by the popular and tongue in cheek humor of the single Brick, BFF had a sound all their own and would have were influenced by a number of other artists and genres including Jazz. Many consider Whatever and Ever Amen on of the best albums from the nineties.

Wishstar by Aeroplane
Album Review:

Here is a little know album by the UK indie band Aeroplane. Their debut album Wishstar shows considerable promise as indicated by the lead single Stop Start which received some coverage when first released. If you like other acts such as Snow Patrol, Feeder & Athlete then this album may fit nicely in your collection. Not all the songs on the album are as strong as the first grouping as it seems to taper off toward the end but for a debut album, you can tell that Aeroplane has the potential to generate a bigger following over the next few years. For a more thorough review of the album, please see the review from Inner Ear Media

Speed Of Darkness by Flogging Molly

Album Review:

A little Punk, a little rock and a little Irish music. What more do you want? Flogging Molly returns with their fifth studio album Speed Of Darkness and some fans have noted a slight departure from their previous sound and features some American political and environmental commentary, but after a few listens, even long time fans warm up to the album. Good strong fast paced music with an Irish song is bound to be more of a hit with the old hooligans than some of the younger crowd but a pleaser none-the-less.

Outside Society by Patti Smith

Album Review:

An influential artist shaping the punk scene in New York in the mid seventies, Patti Smith has had a career spanning almost 40 years and has been called the “Godmother of Punk” by some and was inducted into the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame about a year ago. Outside Society features a chronological collection of the singles from her albums over the year. What you get is a snapshot of poetry and rock highlighted by her most famous song “Because the Night” co-written by Bruce Springsteen. On the language side, be careful with the live tracks she opens track 6 with the F bomb as so many “poets” seem to like to do.

Whenever We Wanted (Remastered) by John Mellencamp
Album Review:

Some regard Whenever We Wanted as John Mellencamp’s best all-around album and the first without the use of Cougar in his name. The nineties proved to be either a time of experimentation or a time to return to one’s roots. John was able to return to his rock roots with a more balance and mature sound. Focused a little more on the social issues of the day, Whenever We Wanted was a comment of the time and while no major hits were produced from this release, it stands well on its own and would make a mice complimentary album for those that already own a Mellencamp greatest hits collection. I am posting this album though I do not think that it will remain discounted for long…

50 Must-Have Strauss Family Masterpieces by Various Artists & Johann Strauss

Album Review:

Some composers get 99 featured songs, others get 50 great songs and the Strauss’? They get 50 songs from to share between them. Most of the spotlight is on Johann Strauss Jr. as 72% of the tracks were under his composition talents. Joseph Strauss is the next most featured with 18% followed by Eduard Strauss and Johann Strauss Sr. with 4% each. The remaining 2% is a combination effort of Johann & Joseph Strauss Jr. To better illustrate the share of the album, I have constructed the following pie chart:

No matter how you slice it, over 5 hours of music for less than 2 dollars makes 50 Must-Have Strauss Family Masterpieces a great addition to any classical collection.

Note of Hope – A Celebration of Woody Guthrie

Monday, September 26th, 2011

Album Review:

Best known for his guitar that carried the label “This Machine Kills Fascists” affixed to the front and for the legendary folk song “This Land Is Your Land”, Woody Guthrie has influenced many artists that followed including Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger and Bruce Springsteen.

Now Jackson Browne and Rob Wasserman are featured on Note of Hope – A Celebration of Woody Guthrie for the 100th anniversary of Woody Guthrie’s birthday. Other performing artists on the album include: Van Dyke Parks, Madeleine Peyroux, Lou Reed, Kurt Elling, Ani Difranco, Nellie McKay, Tony Trischka and more. A highlight on the album is the song You Know the Night performed by Jackson Brown is a 15 minute long song whose lyrics were taken from one of Guthrie’s notebooks he wrote in shortly before he married his second wife.

Album Review:

One of the most beloved modern Disney movies, The Lion King (You can Pre-order The Lion King on Blu-Ray/DVD Combo for $39.87), is great not only for the animation and story line, but for its music as well. Relive all the fun and excitement from the movie through songs such as Can You Feel the Love Tonight, Circle Of Life, Hakuna Matata and I Just Can’t Wait to Be King. Featuring the musical talents of Joseph Williams, Elton John and Hans Zimmer, pick up The Lion King: Special Edition while the album is on sale.

Off the Wall by Michael Jackson

Album Review:

One of the best R&B/Pop albums from the King of Pop, Off the Wall was released in the late seventies and continued his rise to stardom and features the song “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” to lead out on the album. His fifth studio album was a departure from the Motown sound and was influenced by funk, disco-pop, soft rock, jazz and… what else? pop. Michael collaborated with the likes of Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder and Rod Temperton on this timeless album which has sold over 20 million copies worldwide. I have not see a price this low on any Michael Jackson albums for quite some time.
