Greatest Hits 2 by Journey

Album Review:

Looking to follow up on the success of their first Greatest Hits album, Columbia is releasing a second collection of greatest hits from the Journey, one of the best selling bands from the eighties. The new collection features a number of Top 40 and Top 20 singles that were not part of the original Greatest Hits including Just The Same Way, Patiently, and Anytime. In addition, some of original band members including Steve Perry, Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain have picked out their favorites to round out the 67 minute compilation.

Nightmare Before Christmas Special Edition by Various

Album Review:

What would Halloween be without hearing the song “This is Halloween” at least a couple times? Tim Burton’s beloved tale Nightmare Before Christmas has received both critical acclaim and fan support thanks in part to the music written by Oingo Boingo’s Danny Elfman. Relive the classic that has become a Halloween staple, at least around my house, with the Special Edition soundtrack featuring additional tracks including covers by Marilyn Manson, Fiona Apple, Fall Out Boy, She Wants Revenge and Panic! at The Disco.

A Different Kind Of Pain by Cold

A Different Kind Of Pain (Domestic Version) by Cold
Album Review:

Prior to this 2005 release, Cold was known for a hard sound and frequent screaming from lead singer Scooter Ward. Gone is the screaming but the hard driving sound remains though traditional fans were split on this particular release. Sound consistency can be difficult to achieve for this post-grunge band that has averaged a line up change about every year and a half. I am one who prefers singing over screaming in the music so as I heard A Different Kind Of Pain represented a slight change that enticed me to take a listen. As is the case with many of the Drifting Deals, take a sample listen and hear for yourself, it could be one of those albums that fills a hole in music collection.

Hits Are For Squares by Sonic Youth

Sunday, October 30th, 2011

Album Review:

One of the original noise rock group formed in New York during the early eighties, Sonic Youth has not had a best of collection since the late eighties and the title, Hits Are For Squares reflects why. This collection was originally produced for Starbucks outlets (which explains the cover) and since the group themselves didn’t want to select the tracks, they asked other artisans which included Beck, Radiohead, Eddie Vedder, Flea, and The Flaming Lips to name a few, to select the songs to be included. They came up with a full album featuring 16 tracks from their long career. This would be a perfect album for any casual Sonic Youth fan.

Ghostbird by Zee Avi

Album Review:

Zee Avi was born on the east of Malaysia on the ancient island of Borneo, was discovered like so many are now-a-days by a YouTube video. Her combination of simple vocals and melodies is what draws many listeners to her music. A nice laid back album that can be listened to time and time again, Ghostbird is a solid sophomore album from this artist that still has many years ahead of her.

Eleven by Martina McBride

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Album Review:

What’s in a Number? Sometimes a great deal. Martina McBride’s latest is titled Eleven because it is her eleventh album, featuring eleven songs and it was released the eleventh of October. Not sure why she didn’t wait until November as the eleventh month, though looking past the gimmicks, this is one of her strongest albums of her career and marks the debut on her new label. Eleven has a great mix of ballads, rocking tunes and what would a Martina McBride album be without two or three inspirational tracks. The country diva has delivered again and fans are already anticipating number twelfth with excitement. We are featuring this new release today but I wouldn’t be surprised to see this as a deal of the day in the next month or two.

Some Lessons Learned by Kristin Chenoweth

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

Album Review:

Kristin Chenoweth has returned to her Oklahoma roots on Some Lessons Learned, her fourth studio album, to create an outstanding country pop sound to compliment the other styles on her previous releases. Chenoweth has extensive work in Broadway (including the popular production Wicked) and most recently on television shows featuring musical numbers such as Pushing Daisies and Glee. Her powerful voice shines on the ballads and the album is highlighted by the touching tribute “Fathers And Daughters”.

Sampler by The Cringe

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

Album Review:

It nice when a Sampler features a whole album’s worth of music from the same group to give you an option to hear a full spectrum of their sound. It’s even better when they offer the sampler for free. The Cringe have their own sound but their influences range from the Foo Fighters to Velvet Underground and 19 other prominent bands through the years according to the band’s myspace page. Many times these Samplers are only Free for a limited time so you may want to download this 14 track Sampler by The Cringe while you can still get it for nothing.

What happens when you mix the California surfer sound of the Beach Boys and timeless music from Disney soundtracks? You get the new album In the Key of Disney by Brian Wilson. Both Brian Wilson and Walt Disney have helped to define a portion of the entertainment industry for many years and it only seems fitting that these two names come together on this unique collection.
