White Christmas by Bing Crosby

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

White Christmas by Bing Crosby:

Try to forget the fact that Bing Crosby probably never had to record another song in his life after he immortalized “White Christmas.” If you can do that, you’ll find plenty more to like in this crooning Christmas collection. There’s the Romantic Bing, charming the tinsel right off the tree with “The Christmas Song,” and that cure for cabin fever, “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!” There’s the Reverent Bing, solemnly singing “Adeste Fideles.” And of course, there’s Bing the Showman, belting out “Good King Wenceslas” with a bit of that ole vaudeville shine. But no matter what you’re told, “White Christmas” will be the number one reason for sticking this one in your stocking. And who can blame you? It’s as timeless now as it was way back when. –Steve Gdula

Merry Christmas by Mariah Carey

Album Review:

Mariah Carey’s first Christmas album Merry Christmas not only features the covers of typical Christmas songs but features some original (at the time) songs including “All Want for Christmas Is You” and “Jesus Born on This Day”. The latter being one of the more impressive track on the release as it used a synthesized orchestra and a live children’s choir. This album is going on 17 years old and is still a favorite for more than just her fans.

I Wish You A Merry Christmas by Bing Crosby

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

From an Amazon Reviewer:

“I Wish You A Merry Christmas” should be a Christmas time staple. It is always overshadowed, of course, by “White Christmas”, but it has some of the best versions of holiday classics ever recorded. Like “White Christmas” (which was originally entitled “Merry Christmas”) it has the wonderfully swinging melodic background accompaniment from the legendary Andrews Sisters. His voice truly is an instrument with many moods. I don’t think you can actually have a good Christmas music collection without this album, along with “White Christmas”. I can’t imagine what it must have been like on Christmas before Bing Crosby. After all, he is, without a doubt, the “Great Crooner of Christmas”.

Together by The Antlers

Album Review:

The Antlers originally formed as a Solo project by Peter Silberman when he moved to Brooklyn but after two albums, he rounded out the group with Michael Lerner and Darby Cicci. Their latest release Together could be classified as an EP but is a full 55 minutes. If you want to sample some of The Antlers music, you may want to check out Frenchkiss Records Super Sampler which features the songs Two and Bear along with 6 other tracks from Frenchkiss Records artist and is currently to download for FREE.

Whatever by Hot Chelle Rae

Tuesday, November 29th, 2011

Amazon Editorial Reviews:

Before Hot Chelle Rae “fueled up the Jeep with bubbly elasti-funk and breezy hip-hop swagger” (as Entertainment Weekly put it) with their brand new single “I Like It Like That,” the Nashville-based quartet scored a bonafide breakthrough smash hit over the last several months with “Tonight Tonight.” Declared “one of the catchiest pop-rock anthems of the summer” by USA Today, “Tonight Tonight” crashed into the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in July like an unruly teenager, shot to No. 1 at Hot AC radio in September, was certified double-platinum in the U.S., and certified platinum in Canada and Australia. Meanwhile, its hilarious video (featuring a cameo by guitarist Nash Overstreet’s brother, Glee’s Chord Overstreet) has racked up nearly 30 million views online, energizing the group’s active, devoted fan base. But it wasn’t until Jon Stewart sang a snippet of its chorus on The Daily Show that the band realized just how thoroughly “Tonight Tonight” had penetrated the mainstream.

Honor Among Thieves by Edwin McCain
Album Review:

Following a couple independent releases, Edwin McCain signed with Lava/Atlantic Records and released his big label debut Honor Among Thieves. Described by some as a Southern Rock Jazz Blues musician with a touch of folk, Edwin is able to combine acoustic and electric guitars with saxophones to create a memorably unique sound. His vocals also provide a certain edge and passion that is missing in many acts that perform today. If you missed his first major label debut, you can download this at a discounted price while it is one of the drifting deals.

Deep Down & Dirty by Stereo MC’s
Album Review:

Nine years after the release of 1992 hit album “Connected” fans were anxiously awaiting the next thing from the British electronic dance / hip-hop group Stereo MCs and Deep Down & Dirty was well worth the wait (at least back in 2001). Many here in the United States may have missed this album as it was not released here back in the day and didn’t get the recognition that their early work received but is still a decent effort. You are most likely did not wake up this morning telling yourself that today you want to find a funky border-line rap hip-hop album from about ten years ago… but if you did, grab Deep Down & Dirty by Stereo MC’s before the price goes up.

Chicago: 16 (Expanded & Remastered) by Chicago
Album Review:

In 1981, the group Chicago went through a renovation that would influence their sound for the next decade and introduce them to a growing number of younger fans. David Foster took the lead in this shift by agreeing to produce their sixteenth album Chicago 16. With the help of lead singer Peter Cetera, the duo was able to steer the album from the jazz rock influence to a more adult contemporary sound. They also drew upon outside artists including members of Toto to lend their expertise. Chicago 16 features the hit singles “Hard to Say I’m Sorry”and “Love Me Tomorrow” and helped to revive the popularity of the long-time band for years to come.

Boys In The Trees by Carly Simon
Album Review:

In 1978, Carly Simon released her seventh studio album Boys In The Trees which featured top ten hit “You Belong to Me” and top 40 hit “Devoted to You”, sung with James Taylor who was her husband at the time. The album would eventually peak at number 10 but for some of her fans, Boys In The Trees is the perfect snapshot of Carly as a musician since it features at least one song in each of the styles that she has used in the past including soft rock, ballads and rock diva.
