The Best Of The First 10 Years [Explicit] by Elvis Costello

Album Review:

If you are new to Elvis Costello, The Best Of The First 10 Years is a great starting point. For those long time Costello fans, you most likely already have the 20 songs featured in this collection. Some have called the first ten years the most productive of his career and this album hits the best and highlights both his lyrical and musical talents.

Symphony Soldier by The Cab

Saturday, December 31st, 2011

Album Review:

After leaving their original label, the Las Vegas based band The Cab released Symphony Soldier independently using their own funds. As a sophomore album, The Cab keep it coming with catchy lyrics and memorable melodies that make Symphony Soldier one of the best independently released works of 2011. (I also believe that this is one of the best covers of 2011 as well) If you are looking for the CD of Symphony Soldier, you will need to visit the band’s website. http://thecabrock.com/

For True by Trombone Shorty

Album Review:

What a way to rock and jazz in the new year. Trombone Shorty has a way to blend all sorts of music styles to form what he calls Supafunkrock! His latest album For True showcases his talents and those of some of his artist friends including Jeff Beck, Kid Rock, Lenny Kravitz, and Warren Haynes to name a few. Don’t let this deal pass you by.

Ashes & Fire by Ryan Adams:

Album Review:

On Ashes & Fire, Ryan Adams has set aside the hard rock and focused more on mellow side bordering on a folk country sounds at times. For many of his fans, this is the album for which they have been waiting. Rewarded with songs with great melodies and vocals with just a slight drawl at times. Highlights of the release include Dirty Rain, Do I Wait, and Ashes & Fire. If you prefer Adam’s hard rock side, then you’ll want to preview the songs before making a decision as this is definitely the mellow side of this talented artist.

Cars 2 (Original Soundtrack) by Various

Album Review:

A mostly instrumental album with a couple new songs and Weezer performing a phenomenal cover of The Cars’ (the band, not the movie) You Might Think. The Cars 2 Soundtrack features Robbie Williams on Collision Of Worlds and Brad Paisley performing the bluesy country song Nobody’s Fool. The instrumental accompaniment was composed by well known film, television and video game composer Michael Giacchino.

Tron: Legacy Soundtrack by Daft Punk

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

From IGN Music Reviews:

Those expecting a thumping club soundtrack, rather than the rousing score they actually deliver, will enjoy “TRON: Legacy (End Credits)”; where blippy distortion rides a dance beat while still maintaining the central theme. The clanging house rhythm and twirling, washed-out synth of “Derezzed” are probably more along the lines of what most will expect here, but it is the distorted hammering beat and fuzzy vibe enhancing the strings on “The Game Has Changed” that show off their work here best. While not the neon-clodhopper you might expect, Daft Punk does an excellent job crafting a triumphant yet measured score that captures the spirit of the Tron world exceptionally well.

Greatest Hits II by Queen

Tuesday, December 27th, 2011

Album Review:

In keeping with the recent UK theme the past few weeks, it only seems fitting to include an album or two by Freddie Mercury and Queen. Greatest Hits II was originally released back in 1991 just about a month before Freddie’s untimely death and features a collection mostly of their European hits from 1981 to 1991 including the hit Under Pressure recorded with David Bowie. Currently 17 of their 42 MP3 releases under $5.00 each including the ever popular

Anna Calvi by Anna Calvi

Album Review:

In her self titled album, British singer (sensing the trend here?) Anna Calvi has created a smashing debut whose concept was based off of some eight track recordings made in her parents attic. Oddly enough, vintage recording devices were also used when producing the album in a French studio. As is the case with many Indie artists, listen before you buy as this release has promise of more to come but also has been called: “rich and strange” by Matt James of PopMatters.

Coastal Grooves by Blood Orange

Album Review:

British composer, songwriter and producer Devonté (Dev) Hynes may be better known as Lightspeed Champion or Blood Orange and has written for the likes of Florence + the Machine, Diana Vickers and The Chemical Brothers. His 2011 album Coastal Grooves, created under the Blood Orange name, is mostly a one man show and has influences taken from the eighties as is evident from the Blood Orange videos posted on his YouTube channel. If you are looking for new music with an eighties low-fi sound, look noe further than Coastal Grooves by Blood Orange.
