Classical Music for the Reader 7: Great Masterpieces for the Dedicated Reader

Sunday, September 30th, 2012

Album Review:

The Great Masterpieces for the Dedicated Reader from Cobra Entertainment LLC is now on their 7th release and this one may not fit the title as well as the previous as there are a couple selections that may not be ideal for listening while reading such as some of the opera selections as it tends to be a bit distracting. Never-the-less, for those that have been following the series, Classical Music for the Reader 7: Great Masterpieces for the Dedicated Reader is a great deal offering 25 tracks and almost 3 hours of music even if it isn’t necessarily the best for listening to while reading.

Sweet Dreams: Baby’s First Classics & Lullabys by Various artists

Album Review:

It seems like they make everything for babies now-a-days including Totally Weird Baby Products like Baby Bangs (to give your baby more hair), Baby perfume and Baby String Bikini. It’s nice to know that not all baby products out there are crazy and can even be enjoyed by parents. Sweet Dreams – Baby’s First Classics & Lullabys features over two hours of classical music on 32 tracks to help stimulate your baby’s development… at least that is what some claim. Regardless of intellectual benefits, classical music (and lullabies) can be relaxing for parents and babies alike. This MP3 only album is a great way to introduce young ones to timeless classical pieces which are performed by various Orchestras and performers to add variety to the collection.

Pet Sounds 40th Anniversary by The Beach Boys

Saturday, September 29th, 2012

Album Review:

It’s somewhat odd that one of the most influential albums of the sixties failed to reach Gold status when initially released. Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys was the creation of Brian Wilson who took time off from touring to focus on writing and studio recordings. From this album came great hits like Wouldn’t It Be Nice and God Only Knows and was noted for its unusual use of instruments and bicycle bells, dog whistles, trains, Coca-Cola cans and barking dogs and it’s intricate vocal layers. 40th Anniversary Stereo remastering of this album has its place in history and has at times been called the greatest album of all time by some lists and hit #2 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list back in 2003. How influential was this album? Beatles producer George Martin stated that “Without Pet Sounds, Sgt. Pepper wouldn’t have happened… Pepper was an attempt to equal Pet Sounds.”

Searching For Sugar Man by Rodriguez

Album Review:

The soundtrack for the Swedish Sundance movie Searching For Sugar Man features many of the original songs from the man who is the subject of the movie, Rodriguez. After a couple unknown folk albums in the 70’s, Rodriguez left music for a time and would later find unknown popularity in South Africa, Zimbabwe, New Zealand and Australia. The movie follow two such ans as they try to track down the Sugar Man to see if the rumors of his death were true. Rodriguez is a live and well and his music has received a greater stateside recognition many years later. If you like the socially charged folk music of Bob Dylan, then you will probably like Rodriguez.

The Best Of Santana by Santana

Album Review:

I was at a wedding recently and the band performing covers songs started playing Oye Como Va and let my 7 year old daughter play the Cabasa Shaker. While the rendition at the wedding wasn’t perfect, it did remind me of Carlos Santana and his song writing skills and legendary guitar solos. Santana help pioneer Latin Rock music and jazz fusion with his strong Blue influence and use of Latin and African percussion instruments. The Best Of Santana features his best and was originally released prior to his resurgence with Supernatural (Available for $5.99) and features a full album containing 16 tracks including Evil Ways, Black Magic Woman, Oye Como Va and many others making it a perfect collection for the beginner fan.

Classical Guitar by Sabicas

Sunday, September 23rd, 2012

Album Review:

Sabicas was one of the world’s most renowned Flamenco guitarist and responsible for sharing the Spanish style of playing outside the Spanish speaking world. His technique is incredible and conveys the passion of the Flamenco guitarist. Classical Guitar by Sabicas is a ten track collection featuring some of his best and is a great introduction to this legendary Spanish musician.
