City Of Black & White by Mat Kearney

Wednesday, January 30th, 2013

Album Review:

Following the success of his major label album Nothing Left To Lose (Available for $7.99), Mat Kearney returned with a similar sound in City Of Black & White. His style and many of his songs will sound familiar as they are frequently used through multiple television programs and series such as Life Unexpected and The Vampire Diaries. Singles “Closer To Love” and “Here We Go” have received significant airplay on CCM stations and is another of the $2.99 album specials that won’t last long.

Greatest by Duran Duran

Tuesday, January 29th, 2013

While English pop monarchs Duran Duran have remained active for two decades, it’s clear that the indomitable ensemble was at its peak during those mercurial ’80s. This greatest-hits collection documents the band’s ambitious beginnings as a funky glam-rock outfit and follows its gradual transformation into a high-tech pop band with loads of commercial appeal. Featuring now-classic tunes like “Girls on Film,” “Rio,” and “Planet Earth” as well as more recent songs like “Ordinary World,” Greatest focuses on Duran Duran’s unending string of hit singles. Although the young quintet that performs “Hungry Like the Wolf” and “A View to a Kill” has little in common with the posh, aging trio featured on 1997’s “Electric Barbarella,” vocalist Simon Le Bon provides some impressive continuity to these proceedings. –Mitch Myers

The Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd-Webber

Monday, January 28th, 2013

Album Review:

Typically, when one thinks of Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera, Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman come to mind. However, the 2004 Original Motion Picture Soundtrack of The Phantom of the Opera gives the music a new angle with Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum (only 17 at the time) in the main roles. The emotion of the story rises to the surface during many of the songs and while not as strict on musical singing standards, helps the listener better identify with the characters. Those that keep an open mind to this newer interpretation will be pleasantly surprised. Just one of the many $2.99 album specials that won’t last long.

Babel (Deluxe Edition) by Mumford & Sons

Sunday, January 27th, 2013

Album Review:

The Sophomore album Babel from the English folk rock band Mumford & Sons has been well received by fans and nominated for four Grammy Awards. While some critics haven’t given it as high marks as , they have been able to perfect their sound and it should represent more of what is to come from this popular band. The Deluxe Version features three bonus tracks including a cover of Paul Simon’s The Boxer. At least pick up the I Will Wait track from the album which is FREE for a limited time.

Big Mozart Box

Saturday, January 26th, 2013

Album Review:

Vanguard Classics is scheduled to release the next classical Big Box collection on 01/27/2013. Big Mozart Box contains almost 14 hours of well performed music by Mozart. As is typical of these collections, the recordings are very well preserved and an absolute bargain at the introductory price of $0.99. At 131 tracks, it works out to be less than a penny per track and about 7 cents per hour of music, you can’t go wrong.

Night Train by Jason Aldean

Friday, January 25th, 2013

Album Review:

Jason Aldean has been on a good stretch the last few years. His latest release Night Train has already been certified platinum, his fifth album to do so, and also debuted at number 1 on the US Billboard 200, Top Country Albums, and Independent Albums. Anchored with hit singles Take a Little Ride and The Only Way I Know, Night Train has been described as more Southern rock than traditional country. Night Train is one of about 20 country albums on sale for $2.99 – $3.99 for a limited time.

The Sound Of Music – 45th Anniversary Edition

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2013

Album Review:

Not sure how long the $2.99 album special will last but it would have been a shame if I overlooked The Sound Of Music – 45th Anniversary Edition featuring Julie Andrews and company. One of motion picture’s greatest interpretations of a Broadway play that tells the story of Maria von Trapp and was the last musical written by Rodgers and Hammerstein prior to the Hammerstein’s death. Many of the songs have become standard such as “Edelweiss”, “My Favorite Things”, “Climb Ev’ry Mountain”, “Do-Re-Mi”, and the title song “The Sound of Music”. This is an album for the whole family which my wife and kids like to sing along to on Sunday afternoons.

$3.99 Albums (20% Decent, 80% Crap)

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2013

As those of you that are long-time visitors may well know, I am not a big fan of hip hop and rap, so I was not entirely thrilled with Google play’s selection of $3.99 albums this week. There is one worthwhile album in Greatest Hits by Bon Jovi, and a couple popular pop albums such as The E.N.D. by The Black Eyed Peas and The Fame by Lady Gaga, the remaining selections are various Hip Hop releases and some are really bad hip hop to boot. At least when Amazon matched the prices they included seven additional non-explicit versions of the albums.
